SAN Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone hopes the injury suffered by back-up guard Allein Maliksi won’t sideline him in the team’s PBA Governors Cup semifinal series against Meralco.
Cone said he’s yet to be assessed about the extent of Maliksi’s injury, although he appeared a little bit concerned that the former University of Santo Tomas stalwart may have hurt his MCL (medial collateral ligament).
“I haven’t got to talk to our trainors yet. We’ll get him to MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imagine) by tomorrow and see if he can be ready on Sunday,” said Cone shortly after the Mixers advanced to the Final Four with an 83-73 win over the Alaska Aces in their sudden-death game on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“But now I am doubtful,” Cone added.
The sophomore guard, a former PBA D-League MVP signed up by San Mig Coffee as back-up for two-time MVP James Yap, landed badly while going hard for the basket during the second period of the game.
San Mig team doctor Raffy Sanchez immediately put his knee in ice before taking him back to the Mixers’ dugout, where he later did some exercises and stretching just in case Cone decided to field him back in the second half.
He didn’t, finishing the game with 10 points and three rebounds.
“He’s a key addition to us,” said Cone of Maliksi. “I want to get his confidence going, I want to get him going.”
